Learn more about the progress that has been made in the field of lactation support for breastfeeding families and the obstacles that we continue to address and have yet to overcome. Engage with experts who will discuss best practices and available resources for promoting and supporting breastfeeding as a vital part of mother and child health.

  • Lawrence and Oni: Examine human lactation from a cross-cultural and historic lens to expand ones understanding of the disparities seen within lactation.
  • Lawrence and Oni:Discuss the influence of social determinants of health on lactation equity, especially within historically marginalized communities.
  • Lawrence and Oni:Describe support in lactation for various patients, considering racial/ethnic, socio-economic, LGBTQI backgrounds.
  • Lawrence and Oni: Explore a variety of greater Charlotte area resources that can assist with the provision of inclusive and culturally responsive care with the purpose of improving health disparities.
  • Irby: Describe how hierarchy & patient-clinician power dynamics in healthcare interactions create an emotionally and physically unsafe environment for patients and nurses.
  • Irby: Examine trauma-informed scripts for patient-centered decision-making.
  • Dean: Discuss how a connection to outside resources and support is crucial for long-term breastfeeding success.
  • Dean: List potential resources for providers when considering the continuity of care and wide spectrum of support needed for the success of lactating families.
  • Johnston: Identify the Maternal-Newborn Microbiome.
  • Johnston:Discuss the value of the microbiome and its effect on wellness.
  • Johnston: Identify implications of the microbiome and dysbiosis.
  • Edens:List common differences between late preterm and full-term infants.
  • Edens: Identify strategies to establish and maintain milk supply when feeding a late preterm newborn.
  • Edens:Describe ways to support breastfeeding when an infant is born between 34 0/7 – 36 6/7 weeks gestation.
  • Edens: Discuss strategies for progressing to exclusive breastfeeding when early supplementation is medically necessary.
